오늘 밤, 저 샘윤(유튜브 동영상)이 보스톤 시장 선거에 공식적으로 출마함을 선언합니다.

저를 열렬히 지지해주신 자원봉사자, 지지자, 기부자, 그리고 친구 여러분, 여러분의 도움과 노력을 바탕으로 한다면, 이번 제54대 보스턴 시장은 샘윤이라 불리는 키가 크고 마른 아시안 계-미국인이 될 것을 믿습니다. 그 무엇보다도 이 자리에 참여하신 여러분 모두가 저와 함께 힘을 합한다면 우리는 앞으로 보스톤의 정치계를 영원히 바꿀 수 있을 것이라 저는 100% 확신합니다.

보스톤 정치는 이제 더 이상 소수 선택된 사람들에 의해 움직이지 않을 것이며, 의지가 있고, 능력이 있으며 리더십을 발휘할 준비가 된 사람들에 의해 움직일 것입니다. 역사는 사람들이 힘을 합하는 경우 이루지 못하는 것이 없다는 것을 보여주었습니다. 이것이야 말로 우리가 민주주의라 부르는 것의 약속입니다.

우리 같은 사람들이야 말로 힘을 합치면 우리의 삶을 더 나은 삶으로 만들 뿐만 아니라 우리 이웃과 커뮤니티, 시 그리고 우리 나라도 향상시킬 수 있습니다.

저는 오늘 이자리에 참석한 여루분들이 모두 보스톤의 시 행정에 소외되지 않는 미래를 바라보기 때문에 이렇게 출마하는 것입니다. 하지만 결코 과신의 우는 범하지 않아야 합니다.

이 선거에는 아직도 많은 산적한 일들이 있습니다. 또한 제가 당선된다는 어떠한 보장도 없습니다. 하지만 저는 올해는 다를 것이라는 강력한 느낌이 있습니다.

여기 계신 여러분들이 이미 잘 알고 있듯이, 올해는 '소의 해' 입니다. 옛 전통에 의하면 ‘소의 해’는 부유하고 연줄이 잘 닿아있는 사람이 성공하는 해가 아니라, 정직하며 자신의 목표를 알며 이를 위해 기꺼이 최선의 노력을 다하는 사람이 성공하는 해 입니다.

많은 사람들은 "이번 선거에서 어떻게 승리할 수 있는가?" 하며 묻습니다. 하지만 저는 우리가 이번 선거에서 승리할 것이라 확신합니다. 왜냐하면 이 자리에 계신 여러분은 보스톤시를 매우 사랑하기에 진정으로 열심히 일할 것이기 때문입니다.

여러분이 잘 알다시피 저는 커뮤니티 오거나이저였습니다.

그럼 이제 이 선거의 핵심에 대해서 얘기해 봅시다.

또한 다른 후보들에게 거금을 기부하는 거부들은 저에게 도움을 주기를 두려워할 것입니다. 하지만 저는 두려움 없는 여러분을 바라보고 있습니다.

올해 만약 $500을 기부하시지 않은 분들은 가능한 빨리 저희 선거캠페인에 기부해주시길 부탁드립니다. 그러나 우리들 대부분은 단순하게 $500을 기부하는 것이 결코 쉽지는 않을 것입니다.

Tonight, I want to formally announce that I am a candidate for mayor of the city of Boston.

All of you, our volunteers, supporters, contributors, friends - with all of your help and hard work, I believe the 54th Mayor of the City of Boston will be a tall skinny Asian American named "Sam Yoon" Most importantly -- I am 100% confident that if all of us in this room work together, we can change Boston politics forever.

If we work together, Boston politics will never again be for the chosen few.
But for anyone who is willing, able, ready to lead. History has shown us that when people work together, there is nothing we can't do.

That is the promise of this thing we call democracy. It's people like us, working together, not just to better our own lives, but to better the lives of our neighbors, our community, our city, our country. This is why I am running.

Because I see a future for the city of Boston that has everyone in this room in it.
But make no mistake. This campaign will be a lot of work. And there are no guarantees that we'll make it. But I have a feeling, this year will be different.

This year, as all of us know, is the Year of the Ox. And according to tradition, in the Year of the Ox, success comes not to the wealthy or to the well-connected, but to those who are trustworthy, who know what they want and --- most importantly --- are willing to work hard.

A lot of people are asking "How are we going to win this campaign? ", I know that we're going to win this campaign because everyone in this room is willing to work their hearts out because they care deeply about this city.

As many of you know, I'm a community organizer. So let's talk about the nuts and bolts.
First off, I want every one of you, if you have access to a computer, when you go back home tonight, to go to samyoon.com and click on VOLUNTEER, TELL A FRIEND, BECOME A LEADER.

If you don't have access to a computer, I want you to talk to Ed Marin, our volunteer coordinator (raise your hand Ed), or any one of our staff (raise your hands), and tell them you want to VOLUNTEER, TELL A FRIEND, or BECOME A LEADER.

I want every one of you to think of at least eight friends -- eight is a lucky number for Chinese -- who live in Boston, who are registered to vote, or not even registered to vote so you can register them, eight friends who you will have a personal conversation with about our campaign sometime in the next two weeks, and take personal responsibility to make sure that they vote in September.

Secondly, I want to be very honest with you. We need to have the money to get our message out.

That is an absolute fact. So I'm asking all of us in this room to be involved in this part of the campaign. I know times are tough for all of us in this economy.

I am deeply grateful that you are here and have given money to the campaign. It's not easy for me to ask for money and I know it's not easy to be asked.

But the political insiders are all saying we can't raise the money to be competitive, that the big money people who are bankrolling the others are going to be afraid to help me.
But guess what -- I see a room full of people who are not afraid.

This year, for those of you who can, if you have not yet given $500 to our campaign I am asking you to give it, as soon as you can. But for many of us, giving $500 is simply not possible.

But I know that every single person in the room can raise $500. Every one of us can ask 10 friends to give $50 each, every one of us can ask 20 friends to give $25 each, every one of us can ask 50 friends to give $10 each.

This is how we're going to raise the money that we need. If you're able to give $500 or raise $500, you will become a member of the 2009 Club.

Because if 2009 individuals can either give or raise $500 that's over a million dollars. That's what we need to win this campaign in the year 2009.

So let me end with this. I know a lot of you have seen the web video. So I am confident you will know the answer to these questions. I'm not Ted Kennedy. I'm not Barack Obama. So help me out.

Is Boston a great city? YES
But is it good enough? NO

Can we do better? let me hear you say, "We can do better!" WE CAN DO BETTER

And how about Boston public schools? My 2 kids... Are the schools in Boston good enough? NO Let me hear you say "We can do better!" WE CAN DO BETTER

What about crime and violence? Are the streets and neighborhoods of Boston safe enough?
NO -- WE CAN DO BETTER

And what about civic participation in our city?
When 62% of registered voters came out for Barack Obama but only 14% voted in the last city election --- is that good enough?

NO - WE CAN DO BETTER
WE CAN DO MUCH BETTER
