배우 마틴 리

MA주내 한인들의 활동영역이 점차적으로 넓어지고 있는 가운데 이제는 연기 영역에까지 한인 2세들이 진출하고 있다. 연기인 윌 스미스를 존경한다는 마틴 리(Martin Lee, 29)는 MA주 출신 한인 2세 연기자로서는 최초로 전문극단의 연극 무대에 오른다.
현재 공연중인 무라카미 하루키 원작 "After the Quake"에 출연하고 있는 마틴 리는 인종의 벽이 높은 연극 및 연기 분야에서 새로운 연기영역을 개척하길 원한다. 그는 어릴 때부터 연극에 대해 관심을 갖고 틈틈이 연기공부를 해왔으며 결국 부모님 기대와는 달리 투자은행 쪽을 떠나 연기의 길을 걷고 있다. 비록 배고픈 연극의 현실이지만 무엇보다 자신이 원하고 남이 가지 않는 길을 개척하고 있다는 행복감과 자부심이 그의 몸짓에서 베어 나왔다.
한국어를 배울 기회가 없어 한국어를 제대로 하지 못한 것을 아쉬워하는 것에서 한국인의 정체성에 대한 애정을 읽을 수 있었다. 그는 자신이 유명해지는 것보다는 자신을 보고 다른 사람들이 영향을 받고 따를 수 있기를 원한다. 한인 2세들에게 ‘연기를 택할 수도 있구나’라는 좋은 길잡이 역할을 하고 싶다는 게 그의 소망이다.
보스톤 코리아를 방문한 마틴과의 인터뷰 내용이다.

<자신에 대해 소개해달라.
어디서 태어나고 자랐으며 왜 연기를 하게 되었는가?>

부모님이 독일로 이민을 했었다. 독일에서 태어나 4-5세정도 될 때까지 그곳에 있었고 이후 매사추세츠에 와서 정착해 자라고 학창시절을 지냈다. Boston University에서 Business를 전공하고 졸업 후 투자은행 쪽에서 6년 정도 일했다. 그러나 어릴 때부터 글쓰는 것을 좋아했고 늘 창작 분야에서 조금씩 일해왔다.



<어릴 때부터  연기쪽으로 진로를 생각해왔는가?>

처음엔 그렇지 않았다. 이민 와서 힘들게 고생하시는 대부분 한국 부모님이 그렇듯 의사, 변호사 등의 안정된 진로를 원하셨고 그래서 나도 시도해봤다. 그러나 내가 잘해내지도 못할뿐더러 그게 진정으로 나의 모습이 아니라는 것을 깨달았다. 사람들은 각자 소질이 있다고 생각한다. 그 소질이 괜히 있는 게 아니며 키워나가야 하는 책임이 있는 것이다. 
나는 어릴 때부터 틈틈이 창작을 하는 것이 재미 있었다. 따로 연기수업도 듣고 사람들도 많이 만나고 연극과 작은 영화도 틈틈이 해왔다. 작은 파트이지만 얼마 전에서 ABC 방송사의 쇼에 출연도 했다. 지난 5-6년 동안 활동하면서 나와 비슷한 다른 동양계의 연기자들도 만날 기회도 많았었다. 점점 동양사람의 community가 커지고 있다는 걸 느낀다.



<연기하는 것에 대해 부모님이 어떻게 생각하는가?>

취미나 재미로 하는 것은 괜찮지만 직업으로는 달가워하지 않으신다. 대학원도 가고 결혼도 하길 원하고 다른 여느 부모님처럼 내가 안정적인 생활을 하는걸 원하신다. 나도 왜 그러시는지 이해는 한다. 그러나 요즘 같은 시기를 보면 보장된 직장은 없다고 생각하게 한다. 지금이 자신이 무엇을 원하는지 원하지 않는지 시도해볼 수 있는 시기가 아닌가 한다.




<현재 본인이 출연중인 이 연극 "After the Quake"에 대해 설명해달라.>

일본인 작가 무라까미 하루끼의 작품을 스토리로 한 연극이다. 
재미있고 심각하지 않은 이야기이면서도 다 보고 나면 생각을 하게 한다. 하고 싶었던 일을 행동으로 옮기기 위해 꼭 무언가 큰 비극이 일어나야 할 필요는 없다는 경각심을 주면서도 희망적인 메세지를 담고 있다. 사랑하는 사람에게 사랑한다고 말을 하기까지, 정말 자기 인생에서 하고 싶은 일을 하기까지 지진과 같은 꼭 큰 계기, 어려운 시간을 거칠 필요는 없다. 우리는 무엇을 기다리는가? 요즘처럼 재정난 직업난 등으로 불안정한 시기에 아주 적절한 스토리가 아닌가 한다. 바이올린과 클라리넷의 라이브 음악도 볼 수 있다. 벌써 좋은 리뷰도 받았고 지난주 주말에는 매진이 되었었다.



<이 연극을 주최하는 연극회사 Company One은 어떤 사람들인가?>

보스톤에서 4-5개정도의 주요 연극인 회사들이 있는데 주로 백인 위주이다. Company One은 좀더다양한 민족과 이야기들은 반영하고자 10년 전에 뜻이 맞는 사람들끼리 구성을 시작했다. 보스톤같이 전통이 강한 곳에서 백인이 아닌 소수민족이 힘들긴 하지만 점점 더 새로운 세대들이 도전하고 있다.
샘윤과 같은 경우만 해도 그렇다. 샘윤이 정치쪽에서 활동하는 것을 보면서 젊은 Asian들은 " 아 나도 저런 쪽에서 일할 수 있는 가능성이 있구나" 하는 생각을 하게 된다. TV나 영화에 출연해서 자랑하고 싶은 이기적은 생각으로 연기자가 되고 싶은 것은 아니다. 물론 그렇게 유명해지면 좋긴 하지만 내가 보는 사람들에게 영향을 줄 수 있었으며 좋겠다.




<부모님이 이 연극을 보러 오신 적이 있으신지?>

아직 오지 않으셨다. 비디오로 조금씩 활동하는 것을 보여드리긴 하는데 아직은 조심스럽다.
크게 성공하면 그제야 인정해주지 않을까 한다. 박세리의 경우처럼 말이다. 
미국에서 자라면서 한국과 미국의 양쪽 문화를 관찰할 수 있었다. 두 곳에서 좋은 점만 섭렵하려고 노력한다. 
자기훈련과 열심히 일하는 것은 부모님으로부터 배웠고 자기가 원하는 것을 찾아서 이루려는 독립적인 부분은 미국 문화에서 배웠다. 한국사람들은 우르르 다른 사람을 카피하려는 성향이 강하다. 다른 성공한 사람들을 그대로 따라하기 보다는 어떻게 성공했는지를 배우고 자기만의 방법을 개발하는 게 중요하다고 생각한다.



<미국에서 동양계로 자라면서 부끄러워 한적이 있었는가?>

그랬다. 특히 자란 곳이 주로 백인들 위주의 마을이라서 나의 정체성에 대해 많이 혼란스럽기도 했다. 연기를 하면서 이 부분에 대해 도움을 많이 받았다. 여러 사람의 배역을 많으면서 각자 배역의 다양성과 시각의 다양성에 대해 배웠다.

<연기가 왜 좋은가?>
내가 한번도 들어보지 못한 다른 사람의 스토리를 전할 수 있어서 좋다. 
배역을 맡을 때마다 어떻게 하면 조금 다른 시도를 해볼까 노력한다. 이번에 맡은 작은 국회의원 역할도 전형적인 국회의원의 이미지에서 조금 더 웃기는 의원으로 만들어보았다.
Asian은 소극적이고 내성적인 성향이 있는데 이제 변화가 필요하다.



<어릴 때부터 전혀 내성적이진 않았는가?>

부모님에게 좀 반항적이어서 흰머리를 많이 나게 했다. 학교에서도 좀 말썽꾸러기였고 좀 시끄러운 편이었다. 내가 하고 싶은 일이라도 누가 시키면 하기 싫어하는 성격을 가지고 있었다. 두 문화 안에서 정체성을 찾으려고 노력하면서 나만의 것을 찾으려고 많이 노력했던 것 같다. 나와 같은 배경을 가진 주변의 Asian American들도 정체성에 대해 비슷한 고백을 들어왔다. 
할리우드 영화를 보면 동양인은 늘 공부만 하는 샌님 스타일이거나, 무술을 하는 사람이거나 등의 정해진 몇 가지 스타일에서 맴돈다. 텔레비전이나 영화에서 보는 그런 모습이 영향력이 많다. 이런 틀에 박힌 모습에서 벗어났으면 한다.




<어떤 연기자를 존경하는가?>

Will Smith를 존경한다. 교수님인 부모님 지도아래 똑똑하게 자라서 MIT까지 지원하려고 했다가 결국 영화배우가 되겠다는 꿈을 쫓았다. 그는 어떤 식으로 영화배우로 성공하겠다는 전략을 아주 치밀히 짰다고 한다. 다른 성공한 배우들이 어떻게 성공했는지 사례도 공부했다. 겉에서 보면 그저 재밌고 재능 많은 배우라고만 생각하기 쉽지만 자신이 원하고자 하는 곳에 다다르기 위해 집중적이고 영리하게 연구를 했다. 계획과 목표의식을 절대로 잊지 않았다. 배울 점이 많은 배우라고 생각한다. 자신이 하고 싶은 일을 열심히 하다 보면 돈은 저절로 따라온다고 생각한다.



<앞으로의 계획이나 소망이 있다면?>

Asian American를 소재(주제?)로 해서 쇼를 하나 만들고 싶다. 현실적으로 동양인이 주역을 맡기가 매우 힘든데 이런 프로그램을 만들어 Asian American을 더 후훤해 주었으면 한다. 그래도 점점 나아지고 있어서 좋다. John Cho,  Ken Jeong과 같은 한국계 연기자들이 유명세를 타고 있다. 
보스톤에 5명 정도의 Asian 연기자들이 있는데 서로 잘 알고 지내고 도와 주려고 한다. 최근 단편 영화를 하나 썼다. 오는 8월에 NBC film festival에 넣어볼 예정이다. 이 영화도 한국계 미국인인 감독과 같이 일을 했다.

First Massachusetts Korean-American Actor, Martin Lee
Dreams of Becoming the Korean Will Smith

As the activities of Korean-Americans within Massachusetts gradually expand, there are now 2nd generation Koreans who are entering into the field of acting. Martin Lee, age 29, who says he admires actor Will Smith, is the first 2nd generation Korean actor to perform in a play run by a professional theatrical company.

Lee, who is starring in the play, “After the Quake,” based on the collection of stories written by Murakami Haruki, longs to establish a new sphere within the acting field, which is well-known for its stereotypes towards Asians.

Lee, who has studied acting ever since he was young, quit his job in finances and despite his parents’ expectations, decided to pursue an acting career. Although the life of a theatrical actor is not prosperous, the joy and pride he carries as he builds a path in the direction no one has yet braved is shown. His affection towards his Korean identity was evident through his display of regret of not having the opportunity to learn Korean.

Rather than becoming famous, Lee hopes for other people to be inspired by watching him. His hope is to become a guide for 2nd generation Korean-Americans showing them they can become a good actor.
An interview was held with Martin Lee, who visited Boston Korea.

Tell us about yourself.
Where were you born? Where did you grow up? How did you get into acting?
My parents immigrated to Germany in 1970, and I was born there. But I only lived in Germany until I was about 4 or 5 years old, then we moved to Peabody, Massachusetts. Growing up in Peabody, my brother was always smarter than me. He went to an Ivy League school and now he's in business school. He took the path that my parents wanted for him. I tried to take that path too, so I went to BU and studied business. After I graduated I went into investment banking and did that for about 6 years. However, I always liked writing and being creative when I was young. Expressing myself creatively through writing or acting was something I always had wanted to do.

Have you thought about pursuing your career as actor since you were young?
No. Not in the beginning. Especially having immigrant parents, they had to work so hard to provide for us, and they really wanted my brother and I to do something safe such as doctor, lawyer, engineer, finance. I really tried to pursue that, but that's just not me. I'm not good at it. Some people are good at certain things, and I think they are good at those things for a reason. You have a responsibility to pursue that talent. I began taking acting classes and meeting more people. I started doing some theatre on the side, and even did some student films. Recently I even did a TV show on ABC. Though only a small part, it was my first role on a regular television show. It's really only been during the past five or six years that I've put much attention on acting and developing my creative talents. I've met other people doing the same thing, and so I've discovered there is a growing community of Asians getting involved in theater and the arts in Boston.

How do your parents feel about your career now?
They think of it as a hobby. I think they've yet to appreciate that it is becoming my career. They just think it's for fun, and that's it. They tell me, “You should go to graduate school,” or, “You should find a wife.” Typical stuff. I think it's normal that they should want me to have a stable life. Especially with the financial crisis these days, there's no stability; but I see it as an opportunity. It's the best time to explore new things, ask yourself if what you're doing is really what you want to do.

Tell us about this play "After the Quake".
It's based on a short story by Japanese writer Haruki Murakami. It's a great story for right now because it's a very hopeful play. We are in the midst of a financial crisis, rising unemployment, uncertainty. The moral of the story is that we shouldn't have to wait until something terrible happens in order to take action. In other words the play is about the principle that you shouldn't have to wait for an 'earthquake' before you tell someone that you love them, or decide that 'this' is what you wanna do with your life. We shouldn't wait for tragedy before we take some action. That's what the play is really about. We shouldn't wait for a big financial crisis before we do what we want to do or what we need to do. There's no waiting. What are we waiting for?

So far the play has been successful. Last weekend it was sold out, which is great. It's really entertaining and funny. The message is important too. A a good play has to be entertaining first, or else people don't get the message.

Have your parents seen it yet?
Not yet. I told my mom about it, but I'll have to ease them into it. They'd like me to be more successful.
My perspective is American in some ways, but I also grew up traditionally. I try to take the best from both sides. For example, I take my work ethic from my parents. However, I think American ways are good in terms of following what you want to do.
Also, I think that sometimes Koreans have a tendency to copy what others are doing, rather than really express their own creativity. However, Koreans are a very diverse people and this is starting to show up more in the US.
I think it's good to say, "Oh, this person is successful. How do they do it?" But, it's also important to understand that you can do it your own way. Maybe you don't want to follow the same steps someone else has taken, and that's fine. You can learn what they did, but don't just follow blindly. You have to have some sort of individual ideas about who you are and what you want to do.

Tell us about Company One?
Company One started 10 years ago. They wanted to create a theater company for diverse theater arts, something different from the four or five major theater companies which are mainly white. Boston has so much tradition, but at the same time there are new generations of people coming through all the time. This new generation has to see themselves to understand and discover their identity. For example, young Asians in Boston see Sam Yoon as a politician and now they think “I can become that!" It's the same thing with stage, and television. They have to see themselves there. like being an actor not because I want to be so selfish to say "Look at me I'm on TV!". My goal is to show different sides people, and expose what we are capable of.

Were you a shy person at all when you were young?
I was a little bit more rebellious to my parents. I was always a trouble maker at school. Always a little bit louder. I would say, "No! I don't wanna do that!" Often even when I really wanted to do it. I guess it is because I wanted to make my place in the world. I still don't know exactly who i am sometimes coming from 2 different cultures. Many Asian Americans that I speak with feel the same way too.
We have a few stereotypical roles as Asian actors such as nerds or martial artists. We have to expand that. We have to create a different view point, because entertainment educates people whether you like it or not. You learn a lot from what you see.

Who do you admire as actor?
Will Smith. He was going to attend MIT, his parents were professors, and he is a very intelligent person. Yet, he wanted to express himself through music. While an excellent student, he also always had fun in school.
Anyway, he made it his goal to become a movie star. He achieved this very strategically, actually studying what other people did to get to that point. Many of his decisions were calculated, tactical, and focused. So I respect him a lot. On the outside he seems just like any talented funny actor, but he put a lot of effort and research into his achievement. He had a goal and a plan to get there.

What do you like about acting?
I like acting because it tells somebody else's story. Often we tell a story which we have never heard before. Even for this television show, I was casted as a congressman. So the director said, “Ok, be a congress person.” I had a couple of lines, just a small part for the audition, yet I didn't want to be just a typical congress person. I always have to make my character a little bit interesting. I want to show a different side of that person. So, I made him little bit funnier. There is a saying, "There is no small part, just small actors." I think Asian people have been traditionally a little reserved and shy. We can't do that anymore.

What's your future plan?
I would love to create and produce my own show about Asian americans. I love acting, but realistically it is still very difficult for an Asian American to be a leading role in a movie. Unfortunately, for now casting directors still mostly cast Asians in small parts or supporting roles. It's getting better. We now have John Cho, Steve Byrne, Ken Jeong, a few others.
There are about 5 asian actors in Boston and we all know each other. We all try to support each other. Lately I've been writing a short film which I am submitting to the NBC film festival. We're submitting this film in August. I worked with another Korean American, who directed it. So we are constantly trying to support each other.
