어린시절 초등학교의 운동회는 온 마을의 잔치였다.  지금은 그런 운동회를 찾을 수 없지만 그 옛날 운동회의 추억을 기억하고 있는 어른들은 줄다리기에 대한 기억도 함께 간직하고 있을 것이다.  줄다리기는 마을의 큰 행사 때 온 마을 사람들이 하나되어 줄을 당겼던 놀이이다.  이런 줄다리기가 우리나라에서만 행해졌던 것은 아니다.  줄다리기는 동남아시아 일대의 여러나라에서 볼 수 있는 흔한 놀이중에 하나이다.  태풍, 홍수, 가뭄등의 자연 재해에 맞서 싸워야 했던 농어민들은 줄다리기란 놀이 형식 속에서 공동체 의식을 일깨우는 한편 보다 풍요로운 생산을 바라는 그들의 생활의지를 나타내었다.  우리나라에서는 중부이남 지방에서 줄다리기가 행해지고 있는데 지방에 따라 5월 단오, 8월 한가위 등의 명절 날에 행해지기도 하지만 대부분의 지방에서는 음력 저월 15일 주 대보름날에 해왔다.  이는 보름달이 풍요 다산의 상징이라는 것과 밀접하게 연관되어 있다.  줄은 대개 짚으로 새끼줄을 만들어 쓰나, 일본에서는 칡과 짚을 섞어 엮을 줄을 사용하였다.  줄다리기는 마을과 마을을 팀으로 갈라 하였는데 그 규모에 따라 수십 명에서 수천명이 되기도 했다.  줄다리기를 할 때는 먼저 줄을 만든 후 양팀의 장군들이 줄 위에 올라서서 칼춤을 춰 흥을 돋구는 진잡이를 하기도 하고 농악대가 악기를 부르기도 한다.  그 다음 결전을 치루는 모습은 다른 나라와 비교해 차이를 볼 수 있다.  일본의 줄다리기가 이기는 것을 중요하게 여기는 반면 우리나라의 줄다리기가 몇칠동안 계속되며 서로 어울려 즐기는 그 자체로 즐거움을 느꼈다.  


In the past, a local school's annual athletic contest was an important event for the whole village.  Today, people don't consider this event as important as they did in the past.  Most adults remember tug-a-war as a significant event in the athletic contest.  In ancient Korean History tug-a-war was played during important events.  This game was not only popular in Korea but also in South East Asian Countries.  Tug-a-war stresses the nature of community and thus for farmers, who had to rely on each another to combat natural disasters such as floods, storms, or drought, it was a practical form of entertainment.  Also this game symbolized the farmers hope for a good harvest.  In Korea, tug-a-war is most popular in the central provinces and played during many holidays, but especially on the 15th of first month of the lunar calendar, because the full moon was a symbol of rich productivity.  The rope used for this game was usually made out of grain straw but in Japan it was made out of straw and arrowroot.  It was played village vs. village and the number of players varied from few to thousands.  Before playing tug-a-war, leaders of the each team danced with sword on the rope to increase the excitement.  Following this colorful dance music is played as the game begins.  There's some difference between different countries in the purpose of playing tug of war.  For instance, Japanese tug-a-war put winning as the primary importance, but Korean tug-a-war focused on enjoying the challenge and feeling as a part of the community, in some records it states that tug-a-war was played for days.
