Written by HyunCheon Kim / Translated by Risa Kim The Boston athletic team won 5 medals at the 17th Korean American National Sports Festival which was hosted in Kansas City from the 21st through the 23rd. Although the team did not rank in the top ten at the festival, they did better than expected, considering that they won five medals in six Taekwondo events. Justin Choi won gold and bronze medals in Taekwondo sparring and Taekwondo forms respectively. Also, Hyun-bin Yoon won the silver medal and bronze medal in the high school division of Taekwondo forms and Taekwondo sparring respectively, while Hyun-joon Yoon won the silver medal in the middle school divison of Taekwondo forms. Meanwhile, the golf team, which was considered the dark horse, placed a disappointing 5th. Jung-il Lee, who participated in the festival as a golfer, regretted that, “(The reason for the team's failure to place in the top ten was that) in addition to the fact that we had so few participants, there was not enough support from the Boston Korean Athletic Association.” However, he was pleased to see that all 5,000 Korean Americans in Kansas City assisted the festival with cooperation, despite Kansas’ small Korean population. They wholeheartedly supported all athletes’ transportation and meals. According to Lee, around 2,000 people from 25 different states, including 1,800 athletes, participated in this year’s Korean American National Sports Festival. Boston placed 15th and the state with the smallest team was Toronto with 3-4 athletes. ⓒ 보스톤코리아(http://www.bostonkorea.com), 무단전재 및 재배포 금지 |
