대학 입학 과정은 매우 경쟁이 치열하고 학생이나 부모 모두에게 큰 스트레스이다. 작년에 30,000 명의 학생이 하버드 컬리지에 지원을 했지만 단 2,100명 ( 6.3%) 만이 입학 허가를 받았다. 다른 탑 스쿨도 비슷한 경쟁율을 보이고 있다. 그래서 입학허가처는 매년 더더욱 바빠지고있다. 한 시즌당 1,600명의 지원서를 검토해야 하고, 제한된 시간 안에 어려운 결정을 내려야하기 때문이다.

How to Get into (Your) Harvard
The College Admissions process is intensely competitive and stressful for teenagers and parents alike. Last year, more than 30,000 students applied to Harvard College and only 2,100 (6.3%) were granted admission. Other top colleges are becoming similarly competitive. As a result, Admissions Officers (AOs) have an ever-increasing workload. Often reading as many as 1,600 individual applications in a season, AOs have to make difficult decisions in a limited time frame.

Assuming 1500 words per application, AOs read the equivalent of three King James Bibles cover-to-cover. AOs will read every application they receive, but how will they read yours? Will they look at it? Read it? Consider it? In short, every applicant should ask him or herself the same question: “How am I unique, and how can I authentically express myself to stand out among a pile of folders?”

First you need to understand that your AO is intimately aware of your geographic region and school context. In the process of reading, your AO will utilize her specific knowledge to categorize each applicant into certain blocks from “no chance” to “one to recruit.” In order to do so, your AO will evaluate the following facets of your application.

Grades and test scores receive their first glance. That’s right glance, as in only thirty to sixty seconds of attention to determine whether you are in “admissible range.” Next, your AO will take two minutes to scan your personal information, followed by your activities and awards. (Hint: Everyone is “involved,” but not everyone is a leader.) Then, they will turn to your personal essay, your only opportunity to communicate directly with your AO.

The essay is not only your primary means to stand out but also the only facet of your application you can change your senior year. By then, your grades and scores are fixed, but your essay is a blank slate primed for sincere expression and personality. This composition is the centerpiece of your admissions narrative, which will captivate your AO and make you the applicant they remember from the piles of folders strewn about.

Finally, it is helpful to remember that success comes to those with discipline, leadership, passion, and aptitude. Though you may not be admitted to (your) Harvard, competitive participation in the process signifies you have the toolkit for future success and fulfillment. Though college is an important chapter in life, it is still only one chapter – and an early one at that. No matter the outcome, you should maintain perspective and strive to succeed wherever this seminal process leads.
