한국인이 손재주가 좋은것은 이미 알려진 사실. 패션, 건축, 광고며 내노라하는 디자인학교에는 한국인 학생들로 넘친다. 최근 젊은 디자이너들은 유명 디자인 회사에 고용되는것에 집착하기보다는 자기만의 색깔을 살려 과감히 자영업을 시도하고 있다. 자넷김(Janet Kim)에게 자신의 디자인 공방 RSVP Press를 시작하는것은 쉬운 결정이 아니었다. 모든것이 대량화 되고, 디지탈화되어야 하는 요즘 세태에 점점 사라져가는 수공예 컨셉을 바탕으로 비지니스를 시작한다는 데 두려움이 많았다.

그러나 어릴때부터 가졌던 전통깊은것들과 정성깃든 수공예품에 대한 애착을 동기로 Letterpress라는 인쇄공예를 배우기 시작하여 10년동안 쌓은 패션계에서의 직장과 경력을 과감히 포기하고 100% 자신의 에너지를 이공방에 투자했다. 처음엔 공간이 없어 부모님집 지하실에 작업장을 차렸다고 한다. 추운겨울밤 직장에서 돌아와 주문받은 카드를 손을 호호불며 만들면서도 기뻐서 피곤한줄 몰랐다는 그녀. 이제 버젓이 월댐에 앤틱 프랑스 스타일로 꾸며진 아늑한 스튜디오를 운영하고 있다.

이미 유명 고급백화점인 Neiman Marcus에 야심작인 다이마몬드가 밖힌 카드를 들이는데 성공했고 지난달에는 유럽스타일의 청첩장세트가 보스톤 웨딩잡지 Brides Boston에 소개되는 성과도 거두었다. 일생에서 가장 특별한 순간인 결혼 초대 카드만큼은 자신의 소중한 날처럼 정성들여 찍어내고 싶다고 하는 그녀는 최근 합류한 또다른 한인 디자이너 안드레아변과 함께 다음달에 있을 오픈스튜디오를 위해 마구마구 아이디어를 짜내고 있다.

자신의 소개를 해달라.
자넷: 뉴욕에서 태어나서 자랐다. Nyack College에서 신학을 공부하고 Fashion Institute of Technology에서 패션과 Communication 디자인을 전공했다. 뉴욕 패션쪽에서 10년정도 일을 해왔다.
안드레아: Massachusetts에서 태어나고 자랐다. The Art Institute of Boston에서 Painting과 도자기를 전공하고 최근에 졸업하였다.

RSVP Press에 대해 소개한다면?
RSVP란 프랑스어로 Responde sil’ vous plait 의 약자인데 “(참석하실지)응답해주세요”란 뜻이다. 미국문화에서 청첩장이나 초대장을 보낼때 늘 포함되는 형식이다. 2003년에 뉴욕에서 작게 시작, 결혼하고 보스톤으로 이사하면서 RSVP Press도 옮기게 되었다. 전통적인 인쇄방법을 이용하여 고급 청첩장이나 초대장을 수작업으로 제작한다.

레터프레스(Letterpress)라는 것이 무엇인가? 그리고 왜 레터프레스를 선택했는가?
한국이 역사 최초로 손으로 활자 하나하나를 심어 판을짜 찍어내던 활판방식으로 인쇄술을 시작하였는데 안타깝게도 세계의 기록으로는 1400년대 초반 구텐베르그가 발명된한것으로 알려져 있다. 구텐베르그 가 그 인쇄방식을 처음에 “Letterpress”라고 이름지어 지금까지 그 이름이 내려온다. 워낙 골동품이나 옛것을 좋아했고 손으로 만들기, 그림그리기를 즐겨왔다. 단련된 기술과 인내심을 필요로 하는 수공예인만큼 대량으로 찍어내는 인쇄와는 차원이 틀렸다. 한장 한장의 종이에 판화처럼 깊이 찍히는 입체감이 고급스러움을 주는데에 반했다.

처음에 시작하게 된 계기가 있었는가?
뉴욕에서 자라면서 박물관 방문을 많이 해왔다. 뉴욕에 있는 Printing 박물관에 “Bowne & Co. Stationers”라는 1870년대의 Printing Shop을 재현한 가게를 방문하면서 레터프레스에 흥미를 갖기 시작했다. 어릴때부터 가까운 친지나 친구들에게 손으로 카드를 만들어주는것을 좋아했는데 내 결혼식에 레터프레스로 청첩장을 손수 만들면서 본격적으로 시작하기로 결심했다. 내가 좋아하는일을 직업으로 가질수 있어서 행운이라고 생각한다.

같이 일하는 디자이너는 누구이며 서로의 역할은 무엇인가?
최근 새로운 디자이너이자 프린팅 보조로서 안드레아가 합류했다. 안드레아는 순수미술을 전공했기때문에 또다른 새로운 접근감각으로 RSVP에 기여할거라 생각한다. 새로운 아이디어에 대해 꾸준히 서로 의논할수 있는 사람이 있다는것이 좋다.

주로 고객은 누구인가?
결혼청첩장을 주로 전문으로 하고 아기가 탄생할때 알리는 카드, 파티 초대장, 회사용 연말카드등을 주문받아 만든다. 그래서 결혼하는 커플부터 회사들까지 다양하다. 뉴욕의 패션계에서 내노라하는 유명인들로부터 주문을 받아왔다.

향후 계획은?
우리 공방이 자리잡고 있는 Waltham Artists Association 건물 전체가 11월 7일과 8일에 *오픈 스튜디오를 한다. 많은 분들이 와서 구경하고 갔으면 하는 바램이다.

자기가 원하는것을 추구하고자 하는 사람들에게 해줄말이 있다면?
처음 시작할 즈음 직장에서 일을 하고 돌아와 추운겨울 지하실에서 손을 호호 불면서 주문받은 카드들을 찍어내었다. 그때 느낀 그 전율을 잊을수가 없다. 피곤한줄도 몰랐다. 자기가 좋아하는 일을 할때의 느낌이 이렇지 않을까? 자기가 좋아하는것을 찾아 절대 포기하지 않는 신념이 중요하다고 생각한다. 문을 빼꼼히 열어 당신이 하실줄 모르면서도 “ 내가 도와 주랴?” 하면서 부모님이 안타까워 하셨다. 이렇게 신념가질수 있도록 끝까지 믿어주신 부모님께 감사드리고 싶다.

Tell us about your background.
Janet: I was born in the U.S. and raised in New York City all my life. I graduated from Nyack College in Bachelor of Science, Youth Ministries. Also, I graduated from Fashion Institute of Technology in Fashion and Communication Design.
Andrea: I was born and raise in Massachusetts. I graduated from The Art Institute of Boston with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, with a focus in painting and ceramics.

Tell us about RSVP Press.
RSVP means Responde sil’ vous plait which means “please respond” from French translated to English. Rsvp cards are most commonly used in wedding invitations and also to respond to party or events. I named my company Rsvp Press in 2003. The company was first created in New York City (my hometown) and relocated when I married and moved to Boston, MA. We specialize in high end invitations and cards using the old fashion printing technique.

What is letterpress? And why did you choose letterpress as your art?
The earliest recorded printing process started in the early 1400's. The Korean printers were casting metal type but it was Johannes Gutenberg that was credited the invention of westernized printing. Guttenberg named the printing process called "letterpress". I chose letterpress for several reasons. First, I love antiques and have a deep appreciation for history. I love creating things handmade. Also, I love design and illustration. It was a way of producing handcraft quality work which requires skill and patience. It was not your ordinary laser or ink jet printer. When letterpress printing, you can see and feel a nice, deep crisp impression in the paper. The paper would produce another texture once letterpressed.

Who are some of clients?
We specialize in weddings, baby announcements & party / event invitations, corporate business birthday & holiday social cards, etc. We have printed for high profile figures and fashion design houses.

How did you get into the printing industry? Why did you decide to start your own business?
I love visiting museums. Growing up in N.Y.C. It all began at South Street Printing Musuem at "Bowne & Co. Stationers", a printing shop that resembles the late 1870's. They have one of the largest metal printing type collections in the world. At the time I was working in the fashion industry as a designer and discovered letterpress printing as a hobby. I was fascinated how old antique printing machines operated and produced beautiful prints. This is now a lost art now especially with the latest advanced printing technologies. I've always loved creating hand-made cards for my close family and friends. When I created my wedding invitations and programs, I decided to do this as a business. I'm blessed to do something I love to do as a living.

Who are the other designers you work with? How do you work with each other? What's the role of each person?
Janet: Andrea Pyon is a great addition to Rsvp Press. I brought her on as a new budding designer and printing apprentice. Her education at the Art Institute of Boston with a major in Fine Arts brings in a fresh eye to our growing design boutique firm.
Andrea: We work well with each other, it is nice to have someone else to bounce creative ideas. It makes designing much easier because we can share our ideas and opinions with each other.

What is your proudest and successful successful moment to date?
Just recently we were mentioned in Bostons Bride's Magazine Fall/Winter 2009 issue.

And of course, what is your most challenging moment?
Always producing new creative designs...Everyday is a new creative design challenge but one we enjoy.

Give us a peek into your future plans for RSVP Press?
We are part of the Waltham Arts Association and will be participating in Open Studios this year. The event is on November 7th and 8th. We are located in building 18 on the third floor. Please come and visit our letterpress design studio and say hello!

Any advice for people who's trying to follow their passions?
"Never give up" I want to thank my parents for always believing in me.
