<한담객설閑談客說> 


조선시대  옥봉이란 여인이 남긴 시 한편이다. 첫 구절이 한국유행가 냄새를 풍긴다. 하지만 감칠맛 난다. ‘요즘 안부를 물으셨나요.’ 새해 벽두에 보스톤코리아 독자 여러분의 안부를 묻는다. 새해에 복 많이 받으시라. 

‘요즘 안부를 물으셨나요
달빛이 깁창에 깃들면 저의 한이 크답니다
꿈길을 걸어가도 만약 발자국이 남는다면
그대 문 앞 돌길이 반쯤 모래가 되었을 겁니다’

  며칠 후면 소한小寒이다. 한국에선 제법 춥다는 날이다. 오히려 대한大寒보다 춥다 했던가. 대한이가 소한이네  놀러갔다가 얼어 죽었다했으니 말이다. 헌데, 보스톤엔 동장군冬將軍이 진격을 망설이는 모양이다. 그러니 보스톤은 봄날처럼 따뜻하다. 아니 춥지 않다는 말이 어울릴 게다. 겨울이 덜 추우면 어머니는 늘 걱정하셨다.  ‘김장김치 다 시겠다.’ 세월지나 보스톤에 사는 아들은 김치가 시건 말건, 춥지만 않다면 걱정과 불평은 커녕 마냥 감사한다. 올 한해는 겨울날씨마냥 그저 춥지 않다면…. 부질없는 기대인 줄 내가 왜 모르겠는가. 

  해마다 새해벽두에는 한 두자 말을 이끌어 낸다. 어느 해에는 ‘정靜’이었고, 어느 핸가에는 ‘동動’자 였다. 재작년엔 근이불급勤而不急 이었다. (이 말은 내가 작문한 것인데, 문법에 맞는지 그건 모른다. 그러니 묻지 마시라.) 내 나름 해석하자면, ‘부지런 해라. 하지만 서두르지는 마라. 참, 어느 해인가에는 ‘춥지 말자’고도 했다. 말이 생뚱맞다. 춥지 말자 한다고 내 마음대로 되는 것도 아닐게다. 덥자고 일부러 한여름에 솜이불 덮어 쓸 요량도 아니다. 그저 마음만은 시리지 않기로 했다는 다짐이었다. 하지만 그해 일년은 마냥 추웠다.  하긴 지난 몇 해 동안 이순耳順이라 할꺼나, 이명耳明으로 할꺼나.  잠시 망설이기도 했다.

  고리타분한 옛적 이야기를 또 들먹인다. 어느해 정초正初,  일년을 시작하는 날 아침녁 이었다.  소한小寒 언저리 였을 게다. 지도교수님이 연구실로 들어섰다. 손에 작은 진로소주병이 들려 있었다. ‘각자 자기 커피머그를 들어라.’ 열을 지은 몇 명의 연구원들이 선채로 황송히 술잔을 받았다. 새장안 물 만큼 찔끔 따라 주셨다.  술은 목줄기를 타고 내려갔다. 하지만 위胃에 도달하기전 식도食道  벽만  슬쩍 적시지  않았나 싶다. 그만큼 양은 적었으니 입맛만 버렸다.  성찬식 포도주만큼만  주셨던 거다. 교수님이 한마디 붙였다.  ‘이 술은 이명주耳明酒’.  귀를 밝게 하는 술이라 했다. 그 날따라 지각한 친구가 있었다. 헐레벌떡 교수실 문을 노크했다. 한잔 귀 맑음을 나눠 주십사 간청했다.  얻어 마시고 돌아온 그가 말했다.  ‘하마터면 일년내내  귀가 어두울뻔 했다.’

  올해에 내 스스로 지어낸 말은  ‘방防보다 방放’ 이다. (이 말도 우격다짐 내 작문이다.) 막기보다는 놓기로 했다. 움켜쥐고 지키려는 것 보다 차라리 다 내려 놓는 거다. 입은 막기로 했고, 귀는 내려놓고 풀어놓아 맑고 밝은 소리만 듣기로 한게다.  

춥지 않은 새해를 맞는 당신. 이명耳明! 

‘그들의 귀를 열어 교훈을 듣게 하시며 명하여 죄악에서 돌이키게 하시나니’ (욥기 36:10)

21 Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not:

31 The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests bear rule by their means; and my people love to have it so: and what will ye do in the end thereof?
21 우준하여 지각이 없으며 눈이 있어도 보지 못하며 귀가 있어도 듣지 못하는 백성이여 이를 들을지어다

Jeremiah 5:21-31

10 내가 누구에게 말하며 누구에게 경책하여 듣게 할꼬 보라 그 귀가 할례를 받지 못하였으므로 듣지 못하는도다 보라 여호와의 말씀을 그들이 자기에게 욕으로 여기고 이를 즐겨 아니하니
11 그러므로 여호와의 분노가 내게 가득하여 참기 어렵도다 그것을 거리에 있는 아이들과 모인 청년들에게 부으리니 지아비와 지어미와 노인과 늙은이가 다 잡히리로다
12 여호와께서 말씀하시되 내가 그 땅 거민에게 내 손을 펼 것인즉 그들의 집과 전지와 아내가 타인의 소유로 이전되리니
13 이는 그들이 가장 작은 자로부터 큰 자까지 다 탐남하며 선지자로부터 제사장까지 다 거짓을 행함이라
14 그들이 내 백성의 상처를 심상히 고쳐 주며 말하기를 평강하다 평강하다 하나 평강이 없도다

11 Therefore I am full of the fury of the LORD; I am weary with holding in: I will pour it out upon the children abroad, and upon the assembly of young men together: for even the husband with the wife shall be taken, the aged with him that is full of days.

Jeremiah 6:10-15

14 We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
15 Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.
17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels of compassion from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?
18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

14 우리가 형제를 사랑함으로 사망에서 옮겨 생명으로 들어간 줄을 알거니와 사랑치 아니하는 자는 사망에 거하느니라
15 그 형제를 미워하는 자마다 살인하는 자니 살인하는 자마다 영생이 그 속에 거하지 아니하는 것을 너희가 아는 바라
16 그가 우리를 위하여 목숨을 버리셨으니 우리가 이로써 사랑을 알고 우리도 형제들을 위하여 목숨을 버리는 것이 마땅하니라
17 누가 이 세상 재물을 가지고 형제의 궁핍함을 보고도 도와 줄 마음을 막으면 하나님의 사랑이 어찌 그 속에 거할까 보냐

1John 3:14-18

10 이러므로 하나님의 자녀들과 마귀의 자녀들이 나타나나니 무릇 의를 행치 아니하는 자나 또는 그 형제를 사랑치 아니하는 자는 하나님께 속하지 아니하니라
11 우리가 서로 사랑할지니 이는 너희가 처음부터 들은 소식이라
12 가인 같이 하지 말라 저는 악한 자에게 속하여 그 아우를 죽였으니 어찐 연고로 죽였느뇨 자기의 행위는 악하고 그 아우의 행위는 의로움이니라
10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
11 For this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.
12 Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous.

1John 3:10-12

1 My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.
2 For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment;
3 And ye have respect to him that weareth the gay clothing, and say unto him, Sit thou here in a good place; and say to the poor, Stand thou there, or sit here under my footstool:
4 Are ye not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?
5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

1 내 형제들아 영광의 주 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도를 믿는 믿음을 너희가 받았으니 사람을 외모로 취하지 말라
2 만일 너희 회당에 금 가락지를 끼고 아름다운 옷을 입은 사람이 들어오고 또 더러운 옷을 입은 가난한 사람이 들어올 때에

8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:
9 But if ye have respect to persons, ye commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.
10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

22 Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
24 Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
25 Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

20 아아 허탄한 사람아 행함이 없는 믿음이 헛것인 줄 알고자 하느냐
21 우리 조상 아브라함이 그 아들 이삭을 제단에 드릴 때에 행함으로 의롭다 하심을 받은 것이 아니냐
22 네가 보거니와 믿음이 그의 행함과 함께 일하고 행함으로 믿음이 온전케 되었느니라
23 이에 경에 이른 바 아브라함이 하나님을 믿으니 이것을 의로 여기셨다는 말씀이 응하였고 그는 하나님의 벗이라 칭함을 받았나니
24 이로 보건대 사람이 행함으로 의롭다 하심을 받고 믿음으로만 아니니라
25 또 이와 같이 기생 라합이 사자를 접대하여 다른 길로 나가게 할 때에 행함으로 의롭다 하심을 받은 것이 아니냐
26 영혼 없는 몸이 죽은 것 같이 행함이 없는 믿음은 죽은 것이니라

James 2

11 그 두령은 뇌물을 위하여 재판하며 그 제사장은 삯을 위하여 교훈하며 그 선지자는 돈을 위하여 점 치면서 오히려 여호와를 의뢰하여 이르기를 여호와께서 우리 중에 계시지 아니하냐 재앙이 우리에게 임하지 아니하리라 하는도다

11 The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us.

Micah 1:11

사랑도 믿음도 없는 보스턴의 교회들.

5 For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee:
6 If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.
5 내가 너를 그레데에 떨어뜨려 둔 이유는 부족한 일을 바로잡고 나의 명한 대로 각 성에 장로들을 세우게 하려 함이니
6 책망할 것이 없고 한 아내의 남편이며 방탕하다 하는 비방이나 불순종하는 일이 없는 믿는 자녀를 둔 자라야 할지라

7 For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre;
8 But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate;
9 Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.
7 감독은 하나님의 청지기로서 책망할 것이 없고 제 고집대로 하지 아니하며 급히 분내지 아니하며 술을 즐기지 아니하며 구타하지 아니하며 더러운 이를 탐하지 아니하며
8 오직 나그네를 대접하며 선을 좋아하며 근신하며 의로우며 거룩하며 절제하며

Titus 1:1-9

1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he
desireth a good work.
2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant,
sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but
patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in
subjection with all gravity;
5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take
care of the church of God?)
6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the
condemnation of the devil.
7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest
he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

1 미쁘다 이 말이여 사람이 감독의 직분을 얻으려 하면 선한 일을 사모한다 함이로다
2 그러므로 감독은 책망할 것이 없으며 한 아내의 남편이 되며 절제하며 근신하며 아담하며 나그네를 대접하며 가르치기를 잘하며
3 술을 즐기지 아니하며 구타하지 아니하며 오직 관용하며 다투지 아니하며 돈을 사랑치 아니하며
4 자기 집을 잘 다스려 자녀들로 모든 단정함으로 복종케 하는 자라야 할지며

8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to
much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of
a deacon, being found blameless.
11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful
in all things.
12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children
and their own houses well.

1Timothy 3:1-12

1Peter 5:1-6

9 In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

1Timothy 5:9-10

4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

2Corinthians 10:4-6

17 Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
19 As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
17 네가 말하기를 나는 부자라 부요하여 부족한 것이 없다 하나 네 곤고한 것과 가련한 것과 가난한 것과 눈 먼 것과 벌거벗은 것을 알지 못하도다
18 내가 너를 권하노니 내게서 불로 연단한 금을 사서 부요하게 하고 흰 옷을 사서 입어 벌거벗은 수치를 보이지 않게 하고 안약을 사서 눈에 발라 보게 하라
19 무릇 내가 사랑하는 자를 책망하여 징계하노니 그러므로 네가 열심을 내라 회개하라

Revelation 3:17-19

12 하나님의 말씀은 살았고 운동력이 있어 좌우에 날선 어떤 검보다도 예리하여 혼과 영과 및 관절과 골수를 찔러 쪼개기까지 하며 또 마음의 생각과 뜻을 감찰하나니
13 지으신 것이 하나라도 그 앞에 나타나지 않음이 없고 오직 만물이 우리를 상관하시는 자의 눈 앞에 벌거벗은 것 같이 드러나느니라
