(Boston=Bostonkorea) Myong Sool Chang = On June 18, when South Korea's national team faces host nation Mexico at the 2026 World Cup, the cheering is set to heat up between Korean residents and Mexican-American neighbors right here at Boston City Hall Plaza.

Boston Fan Fest will broadcast the Korea-Mexico group stage match live on a large screen at 9 p.m. that day. It also plans to air the final group stage match against South Africa, set for Wednesday the 24th.

Having achieved the remarkable feat of an 11th consecutive World Cup finals appearance, the Korean national team beat the Czech Republic 2-1 on the 11th and will face Mexico — which defeated South Africa 2-0 the same day — on the 18th, with the group stage finale against South Africa to follow on the 24th.

The Korean American Association of Massachusetts plans to hand out Korean national flags to Korean residents visiting the plaza that day to encourage cheering. As of the 11th, soccer-related groups including the Boston women's soccer club Red Bricks are also planning to take part in the event.

According to the 2024 American Community Survey (ACS), the Mexican population living in Massachusetts numbers roughly 56,000, with 4,200 concentrated in Boston and about 1,700 in Cambridge. For Greater Boston, the figure stands at around 37,000 to 40,000.

The Korean population numbers about 35,000 across Massachusetts and roughly 30,000 in Greater Boston, with some 6,000 in Boston and about 2,000 in Cambridge. By the numbers, the Greater Boston Korean population is nearly comparable to the Mexican one.

That said, given that a substantial share of Boston's Korean residents are college students, actual turnout in mid-June — during summer break — is likely to differ from what the population figures suggest.

Although the 18th is a Thursday weekday, the fact that the next day is the Juneteenth holiday (June 19) makes it a good occasion for families to head to the plaza and enjoy the evening. Visitors can watch the match outdoors while taking in the various booths and outdoor activities, food and drinks, and the atmosphere of an early-summer Boston night.

Fan Fest Guidelines

When entering Fan Fest, be mindful of the bag policy. Permitted bags must be clear and may not exceed 12 inches wide, 6 inches deep and 12 inches tall. Small wallets and clutch bags are allowed.

Outside food and alcohol are not permitted. Water and beverages may not exceed 100 ml.

Strollers, bicycles and similar items are also prohibited.

World Cup TV Broadcasts

The English-language broadcaster for the 2026 World Cup is the Fox Sports family of channels (Fox, FS1, FS2). Some matches, such as Korea-Czech Republic, have already been announced for FS1.

Households with standard cable or satellite service can watch on Fox channels at no extra charge. "Cord-cutter" households that have dropped cable can watch Fox live through Fox One, Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, Sling TV Blue, Fubo and others.

Most of these services offer free trial periods, so signing up for the World Cup and canceling afterward is one option worth considering.

Spanish-Language Broadcasts

In the US, Spanish-language broadcast rights are held by Telemundo and Universo. Geared toward Latino and Spanish-speaking communities, the coverage is expected to convey an especially vivid atmosphere for the Korea match held on Mexican soil. It is also available through the Telemundo app and NBC's Peacock streaming service.
