New England Next-Generation Nuclear Group Holds Third Networking Event

(Boston = Boston Korea) Editorial Department = The New England Next-Generation Nuclear Group, an association of Korean scientists and engineers in the nuclear and fusion energy fields (President Seung-Kyu Baek, Vice President Dong-Geun Park), held its third networking event on June 12 at the NW17 Conference Room on MIT's Cambridge campus.

Held as part of the Overseas Koreans Agency's 'Support Program for Next-Generation Overseas Korean Organizations,' the event brought together next-generation Korean scientists and engineers including graduate students, researchers, and engineers in the nuclear and fusion fields to share the latest technological trends and expand their networks. Deputy Consul General Kwak Jung-Ryeol from the Boston Consulate General also attended and delivered congratulatory remarks, encouraging the participants.

The invited speaker, Dr. In-Woo Song from Commonwealth Fusion Systems, conducted a seminar on 'The History and Latest Trends in Fusion Energy.' Dr. Song introduced the background of fusion reactions—the same principle as the sun's energy source—gaining attention as a future clean energy technology, along with the physical principles of fusion power and key technologies for commercialization.

Dr. Song explained that fusion reactions using deuterium and tritium have very high energy density and are attracting attention as a long-term energy source because deuterium can be extracted from seawater. He also noted that to realize fusion power, the 'Lawson Criterion' must be met, which requires simultaneously achieving plasma temperature, density, and energy confinement time, and that research institutions and companies worldwide are developing various types of fusion devices to meet this challenge.

The seminar covered the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of major fusion technologies currently under development, including Tokamak, Stellarator, Magnetic Mirror, and Inertial Confinement Fusion. Dr. Song explained that dozens of fusion startups in the United States, China, and Europe are competing for commercialization, and that investment and interest in fusion have greatly expanded due to recent rapid growth in electricity demand from artificial intelligence (AI) data centers and the electric vehicle industry.

He particularly emphasized that high-temperature superconductor-based high-field magnet technology has become an important breakthrough enabling miniaturization and economic viability of fusion devices. However, Dr. Song added that engineering challenges remain to be solved, including securing plasma stability, divertor technology to withstand ultra-high heat loads, and blanket technology to produce tritium fuel in-house.

During the Q&A session, lively discussions followed on topics including business strategies and technological differentiation of each fusion startup, growth potential, and key challenges to be resolved for commercialization. After the seminar, dinner and networking time followed, during which about ten participants freely exchanged opinions on research collaboration, career paths, and industry trends.

A representative from the New England Next-Generation Nuclear Group stated, "It was a meaningful time to invite an expert working at the forefront of a world-class fusion startup and share the latest technologies and industry trends," adding, "We will continue to contribute to building networks in the nuclear and fusion fields connecting the United States and Korea."
