In the 2026-2027 Best Global Universities Rankings released by U.S. News & World Report, Massachusetts-based Harvard University and MIT claimed the top two spots worldwide. Stanford University took third place, while the UK's Oxford and Cambridge universities ranked fourth and fifth, respectively. China's Tsinghua University came in sixth, achieving the highest ranking among non-U.S. and non-UK institutions.
UC Berkeley (7th), Yale University (8th), the UK's University College London (UCL, 9th), and Columbia University (10th) rounded out the top ten.
The rankings evaluated 2,250 universities across 105 countries based on research performance and global reputation. Rather than separately assessing undergraduate and graduate programs, the rankings focused on overall institutional research capacity and academic standing.
The surge of Chinese universities was this year's most striking feature. More than 18% of all ranked institutions were Chinese, with China placing a total of 475 universities on the list — numerically surpassing the United States, which had fewer than 300 schools included.
However, the U.S. maintained its dominance at the very top, with American universities claiming 12 of the top 20 positions.
The qualitative growth of Chinese universities was also evident.
