Foreign Vocalists to Compete in Korean Art Song Competition

(Boston=Boston Korea) Editorial Desk = The finals of the 2nd Korean Art Song Competition, hosted by the Korean Cultural Society of Boston, will be held on August 15 at Seully Hall at Boston Conservatory at Berklee. Following the successful first edition last year, this competition is open to non-Korean-speaking young vocalists aged 18 to 29 living across the United States. It was created to promote the beauty of Korean art songs to the world and introduce them to the next generation of vocalists. This year, after reviewing video submissions in the preliminary round, a total of eight vocalists advanced to the finals. The finalists will be coming from across the country—Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Florida, and New York—and each will perform two Korean art songs on the final stage.
Accompaniment will be provided by pianist Chung Lim, who earned degrees from New England Conservatory and Boston University and is actively performing. Judging will be conducted by five vocal professors: Kim Yeo-kyung (University of Dayton), Na Yu-sun (Bunker Hill Community College), Isaiah Jess Muñoz (Boston Conservatory at Berklee), Cho Kyung-hwa (University of South Florida), and Cho Won-young (University of Alabama).
Prize money will be awarded to winners: $2,000 for first place, $1,500 for second place, and $1,000 for third place. All finalists will also receive travel support.

Last year, watching young foreign vocalists carefully prepare and perform Korean art songs on stage gave us a different kind of emotion from hearing Korean singers perform the same repertoire.
